Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a premalignant disorder associated with the chewing of areca nut (betel nut). The habit is widespread in Asian populations but is nowadays also recognized in North America and Europe. The mixture of areca nut and tobacco has resulted in a marked increase in OSF frequency. Blanching and stiffness of oral mucosa, trismus, burning sensation, loss of idiom mobility, and loss of gustatory sensation are characteristic of the disease.
